The Truth Is Out...

Despite Jack's injury, The White Stripes have already filmed the video for their next single, 'The Hardest Button To Button', with 'Fell In Love With A Girl' and 'Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground' director Michael Gondry.

Filmed in New York, the video features the Detroit duo playing the song and after every few seconds being transported closer to the camera, leaving a drum kit behind.

"It's the greatest video we've ever made," White said. "I think it's one of the greatest videos ever made. Michael Gondry is so brilliant and such a child at the same time. He's so perfect and I love the way he works and nobody gets in his way. I can't stop watching it. I've watched it 50 times, probably."

However, the guitarist has a different opinion of the raunchy black and white video to 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' featuring supermodel Kate Moss seductively pole-dance to the Bacharach/David cover.

"I don't have much to say about it," White explained. "It was completely Sofia Coppola (director)'s idea and I don't really have a comment on it."

A Fun Update of Strokes News

THE STROKES have revealed details about their eagerly awaited new album - describing it as 'more mellow' but with elements of MICHAEL JACKSON's 'BILLIE JEAN'.

Out of the 11 tracks set to make the final cut, working titles include 'Under Control', 'Nightmare', 'Supernova', 'Raga', 'Ze Newie', and 'Meet Me In The Bathroom'.

Drummer Fabrizio Moretti said: "We spent a lot of time looking for specific sounds."

Speaking about 'Nightmare', guitarist Albert Hammond Jr added: "That's probably one of my favourite drum sounds right there... It's kind of 'Billie Jean'-ish. We spent all this time to make it sound like a drum machine, but Fab still plays it."

According to singer Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi "blew up two guitar amps getting that sound" for the solo in 'Supernova'.

The band's "first more mellow song", 'Under Control', was recorded live - annoying neighbours: "The neighbours on the seventh floor complained about the noise," said Hammond Jr. "It was four in the morning, and we had to pull the plug. And that was the take where we felt like we had it. But it was all right because we came in the next day and got it."

The Strokes also spoke about the aborted sessions with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. Hammond Jr insisted: "We got along really, really well".

He told Rolling Stone: "But we just had different ways of working. We'll spend days getting the right drum sound. We don't want to hear 'We'll fix it in the mix'".

As previously reported on NME.COM, The Strokes performed three new songs at Japan's Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka and Tokyo over the weekend (August 2-3). It was the band's first live show since winter 2002.

The new album is due for release on October 20.

Does NME actually do any of their own reporting? Hmm. That must be pondered.

A message from the White Stripes

08/01/03
The white stripes would like to apologize most sincerely to the admirers of the band who have faithfully purchased tickets to see us perform in the midst of this, a most unfortunate accident. A bone in the index finger of my fretting hand was shattered in an automobile accident, making it absolutely impossible to play guitar, especially since I've been instructed by doctor's that there is no way I can move my wrist until it is completely healed. The break did not heal properly, and surgery had to be performed. Three screws were placed in my finger to set the bones and insure complete recovery, three screws that will remain in my hand for life. I have provided a link on the white stripes website, www.whitestripes.com, to a film of the surgery on my finger for those admirers of the band with tickets to cancelled shows to better understand the complexity of the situation.

Our shows from the ninth of july 2003 until the middle of September must all unfortunately be cancelled. This includes the festivals in the British isles, T in the park, witness, reading, and leeds. The real shame is that it is virtually impossible to make it up to those admirers who purchased tickets to those festivals with the sole intention of experiencing the white stripes live performance. We apologize to those people and hope that the other fine performers in the line ups will fulfill a lost space for you. As for the club touring dates we are currently doing our best to reschedule certain venues, but again misfortune prevails and we will simply have no time to make them all up. But we will do our best in the situation that we have been given. So, To those who care, or were wondering, meg and myself sincerely apologize to you and hope to get through this set back with the blessings of God.

I love how he calls us fans "admirers." It's so endearing. What a polite young band.
Who Want's to Marry J Lo?

Ben Affleck and J Lo's movie, "Gigli," has made less than 4 million dollars. Journalists say it's lack of success is due to the constant publicity about their real life relationship.

Which reminds me. Word in the tabloids is that Ben cheated on J Lo. oooOOO00ooooOO00OOo. That reminded me how I heard that J Ho herself made Ben sign a contract stating that if he breaked off their engagement she would receive all of the money he made off of "Gigli." Crazy.

So comes my question on the week. Why would you want to marry J Lo?

E-mail me

with your answer.

Justin Timberlake Joins Stones At Toronto Benefit, Gets Pelted With Garbage

Pop star sang 'Miss You' with veteran rock band on Wednesday night.

TORONTO — In perhaps his most memorable cameo since donning a furry dolphin suit at a Flaming Lips performance, Justin Timberlake joined Mick Jagger and the rest of the Rolling Stones onstage during the veteran rock band's set at the concert for Toronto on Wednesday night.

The afternoon kicked off on a low point for Timberlake when a concertgoer's sign questioning the singer's sexuality made it to the jumbotrons for about 15 seconds. Timberlake took to the stage with an obvious awareness of audience cynicism, beginning his set with a small attempt to mitigate the crowd's frustration: "This will be over before you know it."

During his mini-set of "Cry Me a River," "Senorita" and "Rock Your Body," Justin gracefully dodged water bottles flung by anti-pop audience members, and winced slightly at their less than playful jeers. After quietly thanking the city of Toronto for generally being welcoming to him and his tour crew, Timberlake left the stage to make way for more crowd-pleasing acts including the Guess Who, Rush, AC/DC and headliners the Rolling Stones.

Justin got his sweet revenge, though, when Jagger invited him onstage for what appeared to be an unrehearsed performance of "Miss You," in which Timberlake mimicked Jagger's signature sways and echoed his vocals. In a clearly forced but effective fusion of classic rock and bubblegum pop, Jagger even sang the words "cry me a river" for several repetitions with Timberlake. And though the audience still managed to sling a few bottles Timberlake's way, guitarist Keith Richards exhibited remarkable tenacity, as he angrily motioned to the crowd to show the pop star a little respect.

Timberlake hugged Jagger and thanked each Rolling Stone by his first name, then humbly (or perhaps strategically) made a quick exit.

I really really really wish I could have gone to that concert.
